Built upon the foundations of the Greater Vancouver Library Federation (1975-1994), the InterLINK Federated Public Library System was established April 1st, 1994 after operating as a pilot project funded by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and 12 public library boards: Bowen, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Fraser Valley, New Westminster, North Vancouver City, North Vancouver District, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver and West Vancouver.
Squamish and Whistler joined InterLINK in 1997, followed by Pemberton (1998), Gibsons and Sechelt (1999), and Lillooet (2007).
Today, Public Library InterLINK is a successful federation of 18 independent public libraries.
Like all library federations, InterLINK receives an annual operating grant from the Province of British Columbia. It is also funded by participating libraries through direct member levies.
Provincial funding helps federations collaborate on provincial and regional initiatives, fostering greater cooperation between libraries. Levies ensure that priorities and projects remain member-driven.
